Highlights
The presenter is short Australian banks and said he believes an inevitable correction in the housing market will disproportionately impact the country’s banking sector. He focused his comments on Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA AU; AUD 130 Billion market cap), and noted that Australia’s housing market has seen 25 consecutive years of price appreciation. He stated, “It is incredible to think that many of us [and them] have never seen prices go down for one year in the last quarter century; 1991 is the last time prices went down”. And, compared to every other market that experienced a housing crisis within the last 10-15 years, Australia’s metrics are worse (i.e., home prices-to-income, negative rental yields, household debt-to-GDP, etc.) and could finally be near a tipping point. While the catalyst that ultimately pops the bubble is uncertain, the risk/ reward in shares of CBA is attractive as shares are richly valued.
