Highlights

The presenter is short shares of United Stationers (USTR) because the secular headwinds facing office supplies-focused retailers like Office Depot and Staples are likely to impact its business in the near future. The whole office supply chain is in a state of flux and under pressure, and while a duopoly can be a good thing, USTR is one of two wholesalers (GPC’s SP Richards is the other major player) sitting between manufacturers of paper, ink and hardware and larger office supply retailers and small and medium size businesses (SMBs) businesses who are all looking to cut/ control costs. The wholesale business in this market is “effectively dying,” said the presenter.
